About Recreational Vehicle Insurance in Michigan
In Michigan, there are a variety of types of recreational vehicles to choose from, each with its own insurance requirements. At Janis-Shunta Insurance, we’re here to help Muskegon, MI residents who have questions about coverage determine their insurance needs.
Recreational Vehicles
There are four categories that make up recreational vehicles. These include:
- Boats and Watercraft
- Off-Road Vehicles
- Motorized RVs
- Towable RVs
Boats and Watercraft
The boat and watercraft category includes jet skis and pontoon boats. Insurance is not required by the state for these recreational vehicles. Proof of insurance may be required if you plan to dock or refuel your boat or dock your jet ski. If either of these vehicles are being leased or carries a loan from a lender, proof of insurance is usually required to access marinas.
Off-Road Vehicles
This category includes golf carts, ATVs, snowmobiles, UTVs, ROVs, and SxS. You are not required to carry liability insurance to ride along designated trails on private property. Lenders and special events may require coverage.
Motorized RVs
In Michigan, just like insurance is required for trucks, cars, and SUVs, any motorized RV, such as a Class A, B, and C, and camper vans that access public roadways, is required to carry liability and no-fault (PIP) policies.
Towable RVs
Towables include Fifth wheels, travel trailers, toy haulers, and pop-up campers. Because these are non-motorized, they do not require a separate insurance policy. The liability coverage for a towable RV is provided by the insurance covering the vehicle while it is hitched and is being towed. It is recommended to have an RV policy to cover damages to the towable and your personal items you have within the trailer.
